When you are not eligible for an electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), you will need to apply for a visitor visa (TRV). In that case, your friend or family living in Canada may help you in the process. Indeed, they can write a Letter of Invitation where they will attest to the fact that you will be staying with them during your stay in Canada.

Keep in mind that having a Letter of Invitation does not necessarily mean your application will automatically be approved.

This article will let you know what the requirements for the Letter of Invitation are, and offer you the possibility to download a sample for your use.

The Letter of Invitation, in some instances, has to be notarized in Canada by the person inviting you. However, you cannot know in advance if it has to be notarized. The Visa Office in charge of your region will notify you if they need it to be notarized.

To notarize your Letter of Invitation in Canada, you will need a Commissioner for Oaths or a Notary Public to sign your letter (or a certificate which would be attached to the letter).
